Executive Faculty records, 1903-1988. 1903-1988.

Minutes of meetings form the bulk of the record group. These document decisions on hiring, salaries, tenure, departmental organization, buildings and equipment, affiliated hospitals and clinics, general finance, and other matters of vital importance to the school. During most of its history, the Executive Faculty has met between ten and twenty times a year. Since 1946, agendas of meetings have been preserved along with the minutes.

The first building for the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, located at 5815 Delmar Boulevard, opened in 1902. It was the result of a long fund-raising effort that began in 1878. Governance consisted of a Board of Directors. In the early days an Executive Committee of the resident physician, matron, and other staff played a major role. A group of St. Louis women founded St. Louis Children's Hospital as a charity venture in 1879. Physicians of Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri staffed the hospital from 1879-1910. When the college closed, the hospital sought another medical school affiliation. Following negotiations between Grace Jones, president of the hospital Board of Managers, and Robert S. Barnes Hospital was founded on an endowment established by Robert A. Barnes, a St. Louis wholesale grocer, who died in 1892. The original buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1914. In 1911, a contract was made between the hospital trustees and Washington University School of Medicine affiliating the two institutions, whereby the faculty of the school serves as the medical staff of the hospital.
